Restart your Mac. Immediately hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys after you hear the startup sound to start up in OS X Recovery. When the Recovery window appears, select Disk Utility then click Continue. Select the indented volume name of your startup disk from the left side of the Disk Utility window, then click the Erase tab. Disk Utility: Repair or erase your disk. In the Recovery app, select Disk Utility, then click Continue. To return to the Recovery app, choose Disk Utility Quit Disk Utility. See Erase and reinstall macOS. It took me quite a while to figure your question out but I did--and I also had the same question. The following steps should help anyone to navigate around when not using a key board.

(If you have Sierra’s Recovery software installed, as of 10.12.4, you can force either the oldest compatible OS X/macOS to load or the very latest depending on whether you press Command-R. Whether you are trying to fix a stubborn problem, repair/erase a hard disk, or reinstall the latest macOS version, macOS recovery (launched in 2010 with OS X 10.7 Lion) is the right way to go. While this official troubleshooter works well most of the time, it has had its fair share of issues.

  1. Turn 'VoiceOver' on by pressing: cmd + F5 (laptops might need to use 'cmd + fn + F5'
  2. Move around on a pane you are interacting with by using the following: Control-Option-Arrows (up/down/left/right)
    Example: control + option + 'up arrow' -- You will move your selection to the next selection above...
  3. To select a sub-category (e.g. in a grid or table) use: Control-Option-Shift-Down Arrow
  4. To exit a sub-category use: Control-Option-Shift-Up Arrow

Os X Recovery Disk Assistant Catalina

Operating 10.11.6 on a 2012 MacBook Pro...restarted my laptop and the reboot failed. Tried command + R for internet recovery, tried to reinstall from back up on time machine, same issue (circle with slash), ran internet recovery again, tried to install OSX but received an error message saying there's already a damaged copy installed. Back in recovery mode I did control+alt+delete and selected the hard drive for start up disk. My laptop booted up and allowed me to log in again. Everything seems normal with the exception that when I restart my laptop the circle with slash comes up but if I wait 30 seconds it disappears, the apple comes up and then my log in screen. From there everything seems fine. However, it's not. Every time I restart my laptop this same thing happens the circle with slash appears, but if I leave it for 30 seconds the apple comes up and then my log in screen. What am I missing? What else do I need to do to fix this issue?


Any help is appreciated.
